World No. 4 and defending champion Coco Gauff made an emphatic start at the French Open, defeating good friend and fellow countrywoman Taylor Townsend in straight sets. While it was a sweet victory for the 22-year-old, it was a highly eventful opening day for the two-time Grand Slam champion.
On her way to Philippe-Chatrier, Gauff was in a minor car accident, which she considered a good omen. “We kind of got into a mini car accident on my way to the site today. There was this pole that was supposed to go down, and then the police told [the driver] to go, and the pole was still there, so we ran into it,” Gauff said to TNT Sports.
“It was kind of, you know, you felt a little impact. I spilled my juice all over the car. I was like, ‘We can keep going,’ and then I walked out of the car, and the car is not drivable. So we ended up taking a taxi. But I feel like it’s a good omen, maybe. Everything is happening in my first round,” she further added.
During her opening-round match, an unusual scene unfolded as spectators watched Gauff retrieve her spare rackets from a cooler placed on the court to combat the heat. Furthermore, after securing the win, Gauff made a hilarious comment to the camera while walking off the court.
To conclude her eventful day, Gauff was asked about her changed hairstyle for the tournament. She responded positively, highlighting the importance of displaying diverse styles for black hair on tour.
“I’ve said this before; I pride myself in showcasing different black hair on tour. Just so almost every girl can feel represented. The Williams sisters did that for me, so I try to do that for someone else,” Gauff said.
Coco Gauff to Face Mayar Sherif in R2 of French Open
Guaff will face Mayar Sherif for only the second time in her career, with their only previous meeting at the Cincinnati Open in 2023. The American is expected to make short work of her opponent in the second round of Roland Garros and continue her title defense in style.
Sherif recently secured an exciting win in the opening round against Dalma Galfi after battling through three qualifying rounds to reach the main draw. Although the Egyptian appears to be performing well on clay this season, Gauff is favored to win in straight sets and move on to the third round in Paris.
