Coco Gauff begins her French Open title defense with a first-round clash against Taylor Townsend on Tuesday. Gauff will take plenty of confidence into her Roland Garros campaign after making the final in Rome. Townsend has also enjoyed a lot of success of late, albeit at the doubles level. But she remains a very capable singles player and will be out to upset the reigning champion in the first round.

Gauff vs Townsend Head-to-Head Record

This will be just the second meeting between these two players on the WTA Tour, and it is Townsend who holds the head-to-head lead after defeating Gauff in three sets in Charleston in 2019.

Gauff has gone from strength to strength since that meeting, establishing herself as one of the top players in the world on clay. The 22-year-old’s relentless counter-punching and grit were on full display last year at the French Open and again this year at the Italian Open.

The slower pace on clay courts suits Gauff really well, and her excellent sliding ability allows her to track down balls from seemingly impossible situations. Still, she is prone to lapses and goes into the French Open with a 24-9 win-loss record and no titles in 2026.

Townsend has focused more on doubles in recent years, but holds a 14-7 win-loss record in singles so far this season. She made the final in Austin and showcased her clay-court skills with a run to the third round from qualifying in Rome.

The 30-year-old generates heavy topspin with her shots and also has sharp net skills thanks to her doubles experience. Much like her opponent, Townsend is also capable of grinding it out during long baseline rallies.

Gauff vs Townsend Prediction and Pick

Townsend will be out to maintain her head-to-head lead over Gauff. However, the world No. 4 goes into this contest as the clear favorite.

Gauff boasts some of the strongest return numbers on the WTA Tour, winning nearly 49% of her return points and games this year. However, her serve remains a work in progress, and Townsend could look to take advantage of it.

If Townsend can get into her rhythm early on and maintain her consistency, she can make things difficult for Gauff. But we are confident that the reigning champion will comfortably get over the line in this All-American clash and start her French Open title defense on a high note.

Pick – Gauff in straight sets.
