Coco Gauff pulled off a hilarious prank on the Tennis Channel reporters during an interview at the Lindner Family Tennis Center after winning her third-round match. The American dropped the viral “Quiet on the Creek” phrase during her interview and later said that she was fully committed to the act.

After defeating Ann Li in the third round of the Cincinnati Open, Gauff sat down for an interview with Tennis Channel’s Dani Klupenger and Prakash Amritraj. As the discussion about the match went on, Gauff subtly dropped the phrase “Quiet on the Creek” while talking about dealing with pressure on court.

“Sometimes there could be, like, pressure and things, a lot of thoughts and things going on in my head, and I have to like tell myself to be quiet on the creek and just be calm and, um, get those thoughts out of my head.”

The phrase immediately drew laughter from the reporters and the crew standing behind. Gauff later took to Instagram and reacted to a clip of this interview posted by the Tennis Channel and wrote:

“Committed til the end.”

As per the clip, before the interview, Gauff was instructed to pick a random slip of paper from a jar. The one she pulled out read, “Quiet on the Creek.” The American was tasked with using the phrase during her interview.

Based on reporters’ reactions, it’s unclear if Dani Klupenger was in on it, but Amritraj was caught off guard. He said:

“”Quiet on the creek? That’s a new Cocoism.”

Coco Gauff’s Road to the Cincinnati Open Quarterfinals

After a semifinal exit in Toronto, Coco Gauff has so far lived up to expectations in Cincinnati, reaching the quarterfinals for the third time.

Gauff first took on Lyudmila Samsonova on Monday, winning a grueling match 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 to advance to the round of 32.

Next up, it was fellow American Ann Li, who almost took the second set before Gauff bounced back to win the tiebreak and the match 6-1, 7-6 (7-3).

The 2023 Cincinnati Open singles champion next took on Marie Bouzkova on Wednesday, winning 6-3, 6-2 in 1 hour 33 minutes to advance to the quarterfinals.

The No. 4 seed will now face Marta Kostyuk. Despite having a 3-2 advantage in their previous meetings, it remains to be seen how Gauff does against an in-form Kostyuk, who beat reigning Roland Garros champion Mirra Andreeva yesterday.
