For the second time in his career, Carlos Alcaraz has won an ATP Tour title on indoor hard courts, clinching the Vienna Open after overcoming Alex de Minaur 6-1 6-4 in the final.

Coming into the final without having dropped a set throughout the tournament, Alcaraz saved arguably his best performance for last, eventually winning his first-ever title in Vienna.

Carlos Alcaraz Dominates Alex de Minaur to Claim Vienna Title

Alcaraz took to the court on Sunday knowing that he held an undefeated head-to-head record against de Minaur, and he started the final with confidence, showing exactly why that was the case. In the very first game of the match, the Spaniard broke de Minaur’s serve despite the Australian having three game points.

That opening game set the tone for the final, as de Minaur struggled to win points for large parts of the first set. Eventually, Alcaraz wrapped up the opener in quick order, dropping just a single game and moving to within one set of winning his 28th career ATP Tour title.

Although de Minaur started the second set in better shape, holding his serve multiple times in the early stages, it always felt like it was only a matter of time before Alcaraz found another opening. The Spaniard had to wait much longer than in the first set, but with de Minaur serving to stay in the match in the 12th game, Alcaraz’s consistent pressure on return finally paid off as he clinched the match in straight sets.

The Last Word

A multiple-time Major champion on all three major surfaces, indoor hard courts are often viewed as the one surface where Alcaraz does not enter tournaments with a title as an expected result. However, the Spaniard has now started to make some real progress in his indoor game as well.

Last year, he won the ATP 500 in Rotterdam, along with reaching the final at the Nitto ATP Finals. This year, in his first indoor tournament of the season, he has claimed the title to get his end-of-season indoor hard-court swing off to a perfect start.

The Spaniard will have little time to celebrate, though, as his campaign at the Paris Masters gets underway shortly, where a tricky first-round opponent in the form of either Jiri Lehecka or Alex Michelsen awaits.
