Carlos Alcaraz closes in on Roger Federer’s all-time record after winning the Vienna Open title

Carlos Alcaraz has already enjoyed a career that most could only dream of, and is only just getting started.

The Spaniard, in record-breaking time, has amassed seven Grand Slam titles and a further eight Masters 1000 triumphs.

Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic did things few thought were possible across their illustrious careers, but even their legacies feel under threat.

Whether they care about their records staying intact or not remains to be seen, but if they are, they’ll be worried about the rate at which this 23-year-old sensation is racking up wins.

Other than Jannik Sinner, it really feels like there is nobody who can challenge him when he is at full fitness.

His latest title in Vienna only adds further proof to this suggestion, as another Nadal record has been equalled, with a Federer record not far behind.

The first record Carlos Alcaraz has managed is matching his fellow Spaniard, moving up to eight different ATP 500 events won.

They lead Juan Martin del Potro, Andy Murray and Boris Becker on seven, and Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic on six.

And, whilst the second record has yet to fall, it feels inevitable that it will sometime in 2027.

After all, there are only two players who have won 25 consecutive matches at ATP 500 tournaments: Alcaraz and Federer.

The Swiss superstar saw his run halted at 28 wins, with Alcaraz just two away from matching that, having won his last 26.

This extends back to April 2025, having actually not lost a single match in events at this level throughout 2026. The only one he entered and did not win was the Barcelona Open, where he was forced to withdraw due to injury.

Alcaraz beat Alex de Minaur to win the Vienna Open yesterday, marking his first-ever title at this event.

He now heads to Paris hoping to maintain that form and potentially even win another first-time trophy, and put himself in the perfect position to thrive at the ATP Finals.
