Bianca Andreescu has returned to the main draw of a Grand Slam for the first time in almost two years. The Canadian star booked her place in the 128-player draw at Wimbledon by beating Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the final qualifying round in straight sets.

Andreescu was overcome with emotion as she celebrated the victory with her team.

Bianca Andreescu Gears Up for Sixth Wimbledon Main-Draw Appearance

The 2019 US Open champion is presently ranked No. 180 in the world and was unable to earn a direct entry to the main draw. She started her qualifying journey with a 6-4, 6-2 win against Polona Hercog. Andreescu then staged a stunning 6-7(4), 6-1, 6-4 comeback against Jil Teichmann before saving five set points in the second set to beat Sasnovich 6-3, 7-6(4) in the final round of qualifying.

She was moved to tears after capping off a remarkable sequence of victories. Andreescu then made her way to the stands, where she warmly embraced her coach, Duơan Vemić, and physiotherapist, Abraham Sánchez. The sweet moment was shared on social media.

“I am trying to make every match like a Grand Slam final; that is my mindset, with a little bit more enjoyment. To do this in every match is not easy. But I try to go in with the same mindset. Every match is important, no matter who you play. I am saying that plus enjoyment. Because there is a lot of pressure that comes with that. So it is just looking at it from a different perspective. But it is going well-ish,” she had said before the match.

Andreescu’s career has been plagued by injuries, with repeated setbacks disrupting her progress. She tore two ligaments in her left ankle at the Miami Open three years ago and suffered a similar setback at last year’s Canadian Open, forcing her to spend a couple of months on the sidelines. She has also dealt with a range of physical issues, including back troubles and recurring discomfort in her knees and shoulders.

Despite the setbacks, Bianca Andreescu has always found a way to pick herself back up and keep moving forward. The former World No. 4 did not compete at this year’s Australian Open after slipping outside the world’s top 200. Instead, she entered the ITF (now World Tennis) W35 Bradenton event in Florida and went on to claim the title.

The following week, she reached the semifinals of the W35 Weston tournament before claiming another title a week later at the W75 event in Vero Beach. In March, Andreescu also reached the final of the challenger event in Austin. She hasn’t had much success on the main tour of late but will hope to turn things around at Wimbledon, which marks her first Grand Slam main-draw appearance since the 2024 US Open.
