In April 2025, Naomi Osaka posted on Threads, “I am absolutely treating every Grand Slam like it’s the Met Gala.”
And she has delivered every time — bringing couture to the court in a way that would make tennis legends Serena and Venus Williams proud.
On Tuesday, Osaka made her 2026 French Open debut and entered Court Suzanne-Lenglen in a sparkling black corset and flowy skirt, giving the illusion of a full-length gown. The 16th-ranked player wore a bronze-ish, light-brown, sequined Nike dress during her match against Laura Siegemund, which she won in two sets.
Aryna Sabalenka, who also won her first-round match, gave a live play-by-play of Osaka’s outfit reveal on TNT.
“I love it,” Sabalenka, the world No. 1, said. “I love that she’s expressing herself. She feels confident, and that’s the beauty of the fashion world. There’s space for anything, and I love that she’s bringing it on court. I love to see fashion on court.”
After defeating Siegemund, Osaka described her Nike ensemble as “very couture.”
“Also, funny enough, I feel like — you know the Eiffel Tower at night, when it’s sparkly?” Osaka added. “I kind of think I look like that a little bit.”
According to Vogue, Osaka tapped Swiss couturier Kevin Germanier to create her black walk-on look, which he “deconstructed from her past competition gear — a tennis skirt, jacket, and dress” from Nike.
Osaka wrote on Threads, “Just clarifying because I feel it’s important to note. Nike is the one who makes my match dresses/kits. Those have never been a collaboration. The designers work around preexisting designs. S/o Nike.”
Osaka will dazzle Roland-Garros again when she returns to the clay courts for her second-round match against Donna Vekic on Thursday.
