Alexander Zverev is still searching for the Grand Slam title that has remained just out of reach throughout his career.

Now 29, the German has come painfully close on several occasions but hasn’t managed to get over the line.

Zverev’s first Grand Slam final came at the US Open in 2020, where he was one set away from beating Dominic Thiem. However, the Austrian fought back to win in five sets.

He later reached finals at Roland Garros in 2024 and the Australian Open in 2025 but was defeated by Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, respectively.

Despite Zverev’s extensive record of deep runs in majors, former Australian Open finalist Arnaud Clement recently suggested that the world number three might look back with some regrets about his performances on tennis’s biggest stages.

Arnaud Clement shares his thoughts on Zverev’s Grand Slam chances

Tennis 365 reports that Clement said: “I don’t think Zverev, looking back, will be able to say he did everything he could to win a Grand Slam.

“I remember the discourse that existed back in the days of the Big Three or Big Four. It wasn’t the same as Zverev’s, who is completely resigned.

“They (the other top 10 players) were capable of beating [Roger] Federer, they were capable of beating any player, but he said the hard part is that to win a Grand Slam, you have to beat two or three”, Clement continued.

“Now, they’re stuck on the first one. I would prefer, at some point, that Zverev loses while making 30 unforced errors, only attempting winners or only serving and volleying.

“He might lose 6-1, 6-2, but he would have tried something different. I find it terrible to lose 6-1, 6-2, or even 6-3, 6-3 while playing a system of play in which he knows perfectly well he can’t win.”

Zverev’s path to Roland Garros opens up after Australian Open run

Earlier this year, Zverev pushed eventual champion, Alcaraz, to five sets in the semi-finals of the Australian Open, and he now returns to Paris looking for another breakthrough moment.

This time around, Zverev won’t have to deal with Alcaraz, who has already pulled out of the tournament with an injury.

That absence has opened up the draw for a lot of players, but none more so than Zverev. He goes in as the second seed and wouldn’t face Sinner until the final if both make it that far.

The other big name in the field, Novak Djokovic, comes into Roland Garros with just one clay match under his belt this season. He lost early in Rome and later withdrew from Geneva to focus on Paris.

All things considered, there may not be a better opportunity ahead for Zverev than what’s waiting for him at Roland Garros this year.
