Coco Gauff is the face of American tennis for the modern generation, but she’s likely to do things differently than legends like Serena and Venus Williams.

Serena Williams is widely considered the GOAT of women’s tennis, and she’s arguably the best American player of all time. Her sister Venus isn’t too far behind in terms of legendary status.

At 44 and 46 years of age respectively, the Williams sisters aren’t done yet, either. Venus continues to play on tour, while Serena recently came back after four years of retirement herself to play doubles.

The duo is incredibly inspirational. But the new face of American tennis, Coco Gauff, isn’t exactly raring to follow in their footsteps when it comes to longevity.

Coco Gauff says she might have different priorities when she gets to her 40s

At 22 years of age, Gauff has not yet entered her prime. However, she already has two majors to her name, having won the US Open in 2023 and the French Open in 2025.

While addressing the topic of the iconic Williams sisters’ longevity, Gauff admitted that she cannot see herself playing as long as they have.

“I think it’s really cool and great to watch. I grew up watching the Williams sisters, and the fact that there’s like maybe even two generations after me still being able to have that same experience is really insane,” Gauff said, as per Tennis World USA.

“I think it’s really incredible for any athlete in any profession, maybe except golf because it’s a little bit less compact, but just to have, (to) be so great at a sport for so long.

“I mean, I don’t think I’ll be playing in my 40s, just, yeah, well, they said the same thing when they were my age, so we’ll see, but I hope not (laughing). I think I should have other priorities, but who knows.”

The two sisters have won 30 majors between them in singles alone, without even counting all their achievements in doubles tennis. If Gauff can get even halfway there, she won’t have to continue playing to be remembered as one of the greatest ever.
