De Minaur shares why he is happy with his win at Queen’s Club

Alex de Minaur has made his way into the Queen’s quarterfinals, where he’ll face Brandon Nakashima. Coming off a runner-up finish at the Libema Open, De Minaur was beaten there by Kamil Majchrzak.

The Australian responded well, getting past Gabriel Diallo and then Denis Shapovalov to move further into the draw.

He goes into this week as the top seed in London, and Queen’s also serves as another warm-up for Wimbledon, which begins later this month.

Following his win over Shapovalov – one that took just over an hour – De Minaur expressed his satisfaction with how he played.

De Minaur pleased with quick turnaround after Queen’s win

When asked if he ever goes back to practice after short matches, De Minaur spoke to Tennis Channel and said: “I’ve had so many matches recently, I am definitely looking forward to a day off tomorrow.

“But honestly, I think today I felt really sharp. I felt like I hit the ball well.

“I managed to be aggressive when I needed to, and from yesterday to today it was an incredible turnaround, which I’m very pleased [about].”

He then talked about building on that performance for his next match: “And now it’s about building upon that, and getting ready to play Brandon, which should be a very stern test, which I’m sure we’re all looking forward to.”

De Minaur opens up on pre-match routine and approach

Throughout his career, De Minaur has put together a solid record on grass, picking up two of his 11 ATP titles on the surface. But according to him, his approach doesn’t change based on where or what he’s playing.

“Well look, it kind of doesn’t really change every day, right?” he said of his mindset going into matches. You just show up, you do your best, you give 100% and ultimately your job is to make it as tough as you can for your opponent to beat you.”

“You’re going to have some better days, you’re going to have some worse days, where you feel a little bit more comfortable or not. But a non-negotiable is intensity and attitude.”

“And I’ve won a lot of matches in my career not playing the prettiest of tennis or the best of tennis but thanks to that it’s kind of shown that you’re going to have to bring a very high level to beat me throughout the whole match.”

That attitude has served him well over the years. It’s brought plenty of success already in his career and could still take him further.

The only thing missing from his resume is an appearance in a Grand Slam final. He’ll be hoping Queen’s gives him some momentum heading into Wimbledon this year.
