The tournament takes on a new shape after Sinner’s unexpected departure

Jannik Sinner’s early exit from Roland Garros has completely changed the outlook of the tournament. Sinner lost in the second round to Juan Manuel Cerundolo, falling in five sets while struggling with physical issues.

He came into the event as the favourite, especially after Carlos Alcaraz pulled out, but his departure guarantees that someone outside of tennis’ new two’ will lift a Grand Slam trophy for the first time since 2023.

With both Sinner and Ben Shelton now out, Felix Auger-Aliassime stands as the only top-ten player left in that section. The reshuffled field has opened opportunities for players who might not have expected them at the start of the fortnight.

Tiafoe’s campaign began with an impressive five-set win over Karen Khachanov, another testament to his growth and resilience on court. The American then cruised past Grigor Dimitrov in straight sets, sending a strong message to everyone remaining that he’s capable of making a deep run.

This represents one of Tiafoe’s best openings at a Slam since 2021 when he made it through to another quarter-final at Roland Garros. That year also marked his deepest major run until now when he reached the final four at Wimbledon before losing to Alcaraz.

He’s sitting in what is now considered one of the most open halves we’ve seen this season, with plenty still needing answers about whether Tiafoe can truly break through and claim his first Grand Slam title here. But there are signs this could be his moment – if not this year, then soon enough.

Frances Tiafoe comments on Jannik Sinner’s early Roland Garros exit

Speaking to TNT Sports US, Tiafoe was asked if the absence of both Sinner and Alcaraz changes the feel of the tournament. He said: “Yeah, I mean, I’ll be honest with you, I felt it prior. But at the same time, as much as I want to say, yeah, it’s a huge opportunity, a lot of the guys I lose to are not Alcaraz and Sinner.

“Let’s call a spade a spade. It’s definitely a big opportunity. There are some other guys, maybe looking at it like Djokovic and Zverev. Those guys are definitely looking at it like that.

“As far as the other guys, myself included, I’m not thinking like oh, here we go, but sure, I mean, why not.”

Frances Tiafoe has never been beyond the quarterfinals at Roland Garros, a stage he reached just last year. But with the way the draw has opened up, there’s a real chance he could go even further this time around.

He’ll next face Portuguese qualifier Jaime Faria, who hasn’t dropped a set so far in Paris. If Tiafoe gets through that, he’ll meet either Matteo Arnaldi or Raphael Collignon in the fourth round.

In the quarter-finals, possible opponents include Matteo Berrettini, Francisco Comesana, Martin Landaluce or Juan Manuel Cerundolo, who knocked out Sinner.

If Tiafoe does make it to the semi-finals, he could be up against fourth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime – another player looking to capitalise on what’s become an unexpectedly open path to a first Grand Slam final.
