Before the singles matches begin at the final Grand Slam of the year, the US Open, an intriguing mixed doubles tournament is on tap, featuring some of the world’s top players.
Top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka will team up with Novak Djokovic, and Naomi Osaka will pair with Kei Nishikori. Venus Williams, who has two mixed doubles Grand Slam titles, will partner with Alexander Bublik.
Other entries include the husband-and-wife team Elina Svitolina and Gael Monfils, the brother-sister duo of Peyton Stearns and Preston Stearns, and Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori, who are aiming for their third straight US Open mixed doubles crown.
Scoring and match format
Two teams earn a main draw spot by advancing through the eight-team qualifying draw, which will have six direct entries and two wild cards.
But when the action actually starts, it will be vastly different from what viewers usually see in other singles and doubles competition.
Each match will be best of three sets, and to win a set, a team needs to win four games. Ties at four games apiece will result in a tiebreaker. Also different is when there is a deuce score in a game. There won’t be an advantage score, so the next point after deuce wins the game; second-set ties result in a 10-point tiebreak.
The final will be a best-of-three-set match with sets to six games (tie-break at six-all), with no-advantage scoring and a 10-point tie-break in lieu of a third set.
