‘Insane, Borderline Untenable’ – Tennis Community in Disbelief Over ‘Crazy’ Wimbledon–LA Olympics Turnaround

The tennis calendar has always been a relentless grind, with both tours holding continuous tournaments year-round. There has been strong criticism from players against this ‘unsustainable’ schedule as well. But now, the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics has pushed the sport’s logistical limits to a whole new extreme. After the LA28 dates were unveiled, the brutally short turnaround from Wimbledon to the Olympic Games sparked outrage across the tennis community.

Traditionally, the Olympic tennis event kicks off during the first week of the Games. However, due to the tight summer calendar with the LA Olympics running from July 14 to July 30, tennis has been pushed into the second week.

Even with this adjustment, the transition will be too short. This means players who make deep runs at Wimbledon will have just a three- to four-day gap to fly across the Atlantic and compete.

Fans, journalists, and analysts didn’t hold back on X, expressing concerns over what they see as a logistical impossibility for the sport’s top athletes.

José Morgado (@josemorgado), a Portuguese tennis journalist and commentator, simply stated: “That’s crazy.”

Dan Wolken (@DanWolken), a veteran sports columnist and former long-time USA Today sports writer, echoed the sentiment: “That’s insane and borderline untenable.”

Barry Fleming (@BarryJFleming), a fan on X, directed his concern at the organizers: “@TennisUpdates26 Why are the LA Olympics starting earlier than the regular schedule? Annoying that it’s so close to Wimbledon.”

A few also demanded calendar shifts to protect players’ health. A Carlos Alcaraz fan account on X suggested, “Move Wimbledon one week earlier. Cancel the 250s in that week.”

Will Weinbach (@Weinbach), a media personality and founder of Cross Court TV, summarized the frustration perfectly: “tennis is still the sport that treats the olympics like a scheduling afterthought bolted onto the actual calendar.”

There has been wide disagreement between the top players, including Aryna Sabalenka and Novak Djokovic, and the Grand Slam authority over scheduling and prize money. A large group of players signed a letter that also expressed concerns about late-night finishes and the expansion of tournaments amid an already congested schedule.

There is plenty of time for the Wimbledon and Olympic officials to adjust the schedules, as the event is in 2028. And there will be pressure on the ITF, ATP, WTA, and the All England Club to find a workable compromise.
