Winona Cotter prevails in first round of state tennis tournament

Jun. 2—MINNEAPOLIS — Winona Cotter pulled off a slight upset in the first round of the state Class 1A team tennis tournament Tuesday at Reed-Sweatt Tennis Center.

Cotter, the No. 5 seed, beat No. 4 Pine City 4-3.

The Ramblers won three of the fourth singles matches they played and then also won at No. 3 doubles, where Oliver Engler and Cooper Knuesel prevailed 6-3, 6-2.

Cotter singles winners were Logan Granseth, Hamilton Brewer and Everett Engler.

Cotter next plays the winner between No. 1 Breck and unseeded Redwood Valley at 8 a.m. Wednesday in the semifinals. The winner plays in the championship at 4 p.m. and the third-place match is at 2 p.m.
