The French Open begins on Sunday, with Coco Gauff aiming to defend her singles title.

However, two-time defending men’s champion Carlos Alcaraz will not be in Paris after injuring his wrist in April.

The Spaniard became the youngest male player to complete a career Grand Slam with his Australian Open triumph – so, with age on his side, could he be in contention to one day become the all-time great at Roland Garros?

Spain’s Rafael Nadal won the French Open an incredible 14 times – the highest number of titles at any single Grand Slam by any man or woman.

Only nine other players have ever won the French Open men’s singles on more than one occasion.

Swedish great Bjorn Borg’s six titles put him in second place behind Nadal.

Novak Djokovic, the men’s record 24-time Grand Slam winner, is the only currently active player to have won the tournament more than twice.

Alcaraz won back-to-back titles in 2024 and 2025, while world number one Jannik Sinner has won every major except Roland Garros, having lost an epic five-set final to the Spaniard last year.

The only currently active player who looks close to reaching Chris Evert’s long-standing women’s record of seven Roland Garros titles is Poland’s Iga Swiatek.

Swiatek is a four-time French Open champion and won three titles in a row from 2022 to 2024.

Three more victories would see her equal the record set by American Evert in 1986.

Germany’s Steffi Graf won six French Open titles, while Suzanne Lenglen won six in the amateur era – the time before tennis turned professional in 1968.
