The second Bakersfield Womenâs Tennis Open, presented by Kaiser Permanente, returns to the Bakersfield Racquet Club starting with Monday qualifier matches and the main draw Tuesday through Sunday in singles and doubles.
Partnered with the U.S. Tennis Association and the International Tennis Federation, the racquet club is hosting a professional tournament, a W35 Futures event, with a cash prize of $25,000. The weeklong event is free and open to the public.
âAfter hosting such a successful inaugural event last October, we are thrilled to once again welcome over 60 players from over 20 countries to participate in the Womenâs Tennis Open,â said Mark Fredriksz, tournament director and BRC head teaching professional.
There is a kickoff event Sunday with fan/player engagement, an exhibition match and dinner. On Monday and early Tuesday, there is tournament-qualifying play for singles players and doubles to complete the field. According to Fredriksz, Stockdale Highâs Abigail Eao is among those scheduled to play in the qualifier. Eao is the defending CIF Central Section individual singles champion.
Main-draw matches start Tuesday afternoon and evening. Main-draw play continues Wednesday through Friday with spotlight matches each evening.
Saturday features a NextGen Kids Day tennis clinic thatâs sponsored by the Kern Community Tennis Association, USTA women and high school girls tennis round-robin matches and conclude with the womenâs open doubles championship final. The womenâs open singles final will be played on Oct. 19.

The womenâs soccer team had a dominating 4-0 Western State Conference home victory against Antelope Valley. The four goals were a high mark for a single game by the women this season. The Renegades scored twice in each half. Delilah Cardenas scored BCâs first goal in the 10th minute and the last in the 74th minute. Cierra Franks scored in the 33rd minute for a 2-0 halftime lead and Alexandra Gallardo scored in the 74th minute, too, 18 seconds before Cardenasâ second goal. The Renegades victory improved their record to 5-5-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the WSC. The womenâs team will host Glendale, another WSC foe, at 4 p.m. today. ⊠The menâs soccer team won 2-0 at Santa Mariaâs Allan Hancock in its final non-conference match before WSC play begins at 1:30 p.m. today at home against Citrus. The Renegadesâ goals were both scored by Alejandro Alvarez, which gives him five goals in his last two games. He had a hat trick in a 3-1 victory over Pasadena City. Against Hancock, Alvarez scored in the sixth minute and the 85th minute. ⊠The Renegades finished fifth in the latest WSC tournament this past Monday at the Encino Golf Course, hosted by College of the Canyons. Elizabeth Alderete scored the low round for BC with an 87. The team shot 380. The next WSC tournament will be hosted by BC on Oct. 20 at Sundale Country Club. ⊠The womenâs volleyball team lost a five-set WSC match to host Antelope Valley, 25-19, 25-19, 13-25, 23-25, 15-12. The loss dropped BCâs record to 4-14 and 1-3 in conference. The Renegades host WSC opponent Glendale at 6 p.m. today in the Gil Bishop Sports Center.
CSUB volleyball
The Cal State Bakersfield womenâs volleyball team will be in Orange County, starting a weekend of Big West Conference play tonight at UC Irvine, followed by Saturday afternoon at Cal State Fullerton.
The Roadrunners (3-13) are still seeking their first conference win of the season and looking to snap an overall six-match losing streak. UC Irvine is 6-10 overall and 1-3 in Big West play. UCI is just 1-4 at home this season. The match is at 6 p.m. On Saturday, the Roadrunners and Titans will meet at 2 p.m. Cal State Fullerton was 6-10, 1-3 entering its home Big West match Thursday against Cal State Northridge. The Titans and Roadrunners will play at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Nicole Zake is CSUBâs kills leader with 181. Druegan Davis is next with 110, Suelen Lima has 94 and Eva Erzen has 90. Luiza Da Cruz has 236 assists and Evelyn Trivino-Espinosa has 234.
