Brazil’s João Fonseca is the youngest man to reach the third round of Wimbledon since Australia’s Bernard Tomic in 2011.

Fonseca, 18, achieved that feat Wednesday when he bested American Jenson Brooksby 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4.

Fonseca didn’t just rewrite some All England Club history with the victory. He also became the first Brazilian man to reach this stage of the grass Grand Slam since Thomaz Bellucci in 2010.

Fonseca prevailed against the 24-year-old Brooksby in a four-set match that lasted three hours and 14 minutes.

He’ll now face Chile’s Nicolás Jarry in the third round.

Fonseca made his Wimbledon debut on Monday when he took down Great Britain’s own Jacob Fearnley in straight sets 6-4, 6-1, 7-6.

Fonseca climbed the professional ladder in 2024. After starting the year ranked outside the top 700, he rose to No. 145, in part thanks to his run to the quarterfinals of the ATP 500 event in Rio de Janeiro. Then he joined Italy’s Jannik Sinner and Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz as the third-ever 18-year-old to win the Next Gen ATP Finals.

In his first main draw appearance at Grand Slam tournament, Fonseca upset then-No. 9 Andrey Rublev of Russia during this year’s Australian Open. A month later, he claimed his first ATP Tour title at the IEB+ Argentina Open in Buenos Aires.

Now No. 54 in the world, Fonseca is turning heads at Wimbledon.

During his second-round victory, he recorded 50 winners. Brooksby responded to an opening-set defeat with a second-set triumph and threatened to answer again in the fourth set. He even broke Fonseca’s serve that frame to even things up at 4-4, but Fonseca locked in to finish off the American 6-4.

Fonseca is poised for an all-South American third-round match with Jarry.
