Wim Fissette guides Belgium to major tennis success after split with Iga Swiatek

Wim Fissette didn’t take long to move on after parting ways with Iga Swiatek following the Miami Open, and he’s already made a notable impact in his new role.

Swiatek confirmed the split after losing to Magda Linette early in Miami, quickly bringing in Francisco Roig, who previously worked with Rafael Nadal, to fill the coaching gap.

Fissette also moved swiftly into his next position, joining the Belgium Billie Jean King Cup team. Since his arrival, the team has delivered an impressive performance.

Wim Fissette was handed a huge task right away, leading Belgium through a tough qualifier against the United States in the Billie Jean King Cup.

The Belgian side, including Hanne Vandewinkel, Elise Mertens, and Greet Minnen, faced last year’s runners-up on home soil. Even though the American squad was missing some big names like Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula, it still looked strong on paper.

Iva Jovic, McCartney Kessler, and Caty McNally took the court for the US, but Belgium came out on top with a 3-1 win. The victory included standout singles wins for Vandewinkel and Minnen over Jovic, who’s been in great form this season.

This result marks a significant moment: 2026 will be the first time in ten years that the US hasn’t made it to the finals.

Next up for Fissette is guiding Belgium through the finals themselves. The competition is set for September in Shenzhen, China.

The Billie Jean King Cup finalists are now confirmed

Belgium’s stunning win over the United States wasn’t the only unexpected result to come out of the Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers.

Despite missing Katie Boulter, Fran Jones, and Emma Raducanu, Great Britain put in a strong performance to beat Australia and secure their spot in the finals.

They’ll be joined by host nation China, along with Kazakhstan, Czech Republic, defending champions Italy, Spain, and Ukraine.

The qualifiers were short on star power this year as many players chose to focus on starting their clay court campaigns instead of representing their countries.

But with Elena Rybakina, Karolina Muchova, Jasmine Paolini, and Raducanu all possibilities for the Finals lineups. The finals are expected to draw plenty more attention once they come around in September.
