It’s unclear how significant the travel snarls may be in Mexico after the killing of drug lord “El Mencho” on Sunday, but it’s possible the BNP Paribas Open tennis tournament in Indian Wells may be affected as several men’s and women’s tennis stars are currently playing in Mexico.
On Feb. 22, Mexican Special Forces carried out a targeted operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco, that resulted in the death of cartel leader Nemesio RubĂ©n Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho.”
After the operation was carried out, panic erupted at airports in Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara and airlines began canceling and diverting flights. The incident also triggered shelterâinâplace advisories for U.S. citizens and a highârisk travel warning from Canada.
Two pro tennis tournaments are currently ongoing in Mexico with the ATP playing in Acapulco and the WTA playing in Mérida. Play continued Monday without a notable delay, but the conflict in Mexico could still disrupt travel in neighboring regions.
Global events can affect flights in ways most travelers never see, even if they’re nowhere near the conflict or crisis itself. Aviation is a tightly interconnected global system, so disruption in one region often ripples outward into neighboring regions.
One example came after the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, when large portions of Eastern European airspace became restricted. Airlines flying between North America and Asia were rerouted around Russian and Ukrainian airspace.
With flights rerouted, it can increase overall airspace congestion, limit aircraft availability in a certain region and create a cascade of delays across airline networks.
The ongoing tennis tournaments in Mexico are smaller than Indian Wells and therefore do not have many of the top players in the world participating. But names such as Germany’s Alexander Zverev, Australia’s Alex de Minaur and Norway’s Casper Ruud are playing in Acapulco and Italy’s Jasmine Paolini and American Emma Navarro are playing in MĂ©rida.
How or if their arrival at Indian Wells is affected will be a story worth watching before the BNP Paribas Open begins March 1.
