Just days after insisting she was not searching for a new coach, Emma Raducanu has linked back up with Mark Petchey.

Raducanu has struggled to find consistent form since splitting from Francisco Roig and her search for stability on the court has been ongoing.

Now, she has turned again to Petchey, who previously helped guide her through some of her best stretches. She will be hoping he can steady things as the tour heads into the ‘sunshine swing’ in Indian Wells and Miami.

The pair have worked well together before. Under his guidance last year, Raducanu reached quarter-finals at both Miami and Queen’s Club.

This reunion makes sense for the 23-year-old star. She clearly played some of her best tennis with Petchey by her side, and returning to that familiar partnership might be just what she needs right now.

After Petchey joined her team in March 2025, Raducanu started to put together some of the most consistent tennis of her career.

She also went deeper into tournaments and took down several top players under Petchey’s watch. Her run to the quarter-finals at the 2025 Miami Open, for instance, included wins over Americans Emma Navarro and Amanda Anisimova.

Although there were a couple of early exits, including Eastbourne and Madrid, overall, it was some of Raducanu’s best tennis since her 2021 US Open win.

It is also worth noting that she appears to have a strong relationship with Petchey away from the court. That kind of connection often plays a bigger role than people realise in how effective a coach can be.

Their first event back together will be Indian Wells. In last year’s tournament, the 23-year-old exited early after a straight-sets loss to Moyuka Uchijima.

Mark Petchey has already stated that he would ‘take a bullet’ for Emma Raducanu

Even after they stopped working together last summer, Petchey and Raducanu have kept in touch, maintaining a strong relationship throughout.

Speaking on The Big T podcast in January, Petchey said: “Emma and I never fell out… It just got to the point where I felt I couldn’t be the No. 1 coach [due to my media commitments].

“We still chat, we’re still in good communication… I’ll help her forever, I’ll take a bullet for her.”

This time around, much like before, Petchey’s role with Raducanu is not formalised. He is not part of her official team.

The tennis analyst was unable to give his full attention to coaching last year because of his media duties. Time will tell if this arrangement sticks or shifts again down the line.
