It was a season to remember for the Washburn men’s tennis this season. The Ichabods went on a tear this weekend during the NCAA Division II National Championships.

No. 9 Washburn (23-4) defeated No. 13 Concordia University Irvine, No. 3 Barry University and No. 7 University of Texas at Tyler to reach the national championship on Saturday, May 24.

The Ichabods went toe-to-toe with No. 1 Valdosta State for the title. But the Georgia school came out on top, winning 4-2 in Altamonte Springs, Florida.

This is the best season in Washburn history, marking the first time they have ever reached the national title.

In the title match, the Ichabods lost the doubles portion 2-0, which gave the Blazers one point.

In singles, Washburn was able to find their footing and give them a chance at winning the match. Washburn’s Vaclav Schneider won 6-4, 6-4, while Zinovii Nahirniak earned a 6-3, 6-3 victory. These two victories were the only points for Washburn.

The all-international roster for Washburn has been extremely successful this year under fifth-year head coach Kirby Ronning. In the fall, he guided Tim Hammes and Matthew Earle to an ITA Cup Doubles National Championship victory.
