Victoria Mboko advances into quarterfinals at Indian Wells

This is Victoria Mboko’s first year playing at Indian Wells, and she sure is making the most of it.

The 19-year-old Canadian, who is seeded 10th, will move into the BNP Paribas Open quarterfinals after beating American Amanda Anisimova, the sixth seed, 6-4, 6-1.

Mboko will play top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka next.

Mboko, who was born in the United States but raised in Toronto, is building off a tremendous start to 2026. She reached the Round of 16 at the Australian Open, losing to Sabalenka, and then the final in Doha, losing to Karolina Muchova.

From No. 112 to the final 8: Talia Gibson bursting on the scene

The biggest surprise in the women’s quarterfinals is no doubt qualifier Talia Gibson. The talented 21-year-old Aussie stunned another seeded opponent Tuesday when she knocked out the No. 7 player in the world Jasmine Paolini 7-5, 2-6, 6-1.

She had already dispatched No. 11 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova and No. 17 Clara Tauson this tournament. Suffice it to say she won’t be No. 112 when the next rankings come out.

How unexpected is this run? This is her fist time in a Masters 1000 main draw. Forget abut Paolini being the first top 10 player she’s beaten. She had never even beaten a top 50 player until this week, and she’s beaten three.

Her opponent in the quarterfinal will be the winner of the night match between Alexandra Eala and Linda Novoska.
