Veronika Kudermetova and Elise Mertens took home the WTA Finals women’s doubles title for the second time, beating Timea Babos and Luisa Stefani 7-6, 6-1 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Kudermetova and Mertens, the fourth seeds, made an incredible run through the tournament after losing their group stage opener.

The duo beat top-seeded Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini in the final round-robin match, and subsequently reached the finals by dispatching the No. 2 seed, Katerina Siniakova and Taylor Townsend, saving a match point in the process.

The first set of the finals was a back-and-forth affair, going to a tiebreak, and Kudermetova and Mertens finally ended the one-hour and eight-minute set.

Kudermetova and Mertens broke Babos and Stefani’s serve in the second game of the second set and again in the sixth game to take a commanding 5-1 lead, before ending the match when Mertens’ serve wasn’t returned, a theme that continued throughout the second set, which lasted only 29 minutes.

Kudermetova and Mertens did not play together in 2023 or 2024, after winning the WTA doubles finals in Fort Worth, Texas, in 2022. However, they reunited early this year, which resulted in their winning the Wimbledon crown.

With the victory, Kudermetova and Mertens will take home $1.06 million.
