Upset alert: American Ethan Quinn defeats World No. 12 Casper Ruud at Miami Open

22-year-old American tennis player Ethan Quinn defeated Hubert Hurkacz in his opening round of the 2026 Miami Open and followed it up with an even bigger win in the second round over World No. 12 Casper Ruud.

The Fresno, California native turned pro in 2023. He impressed many with his steely nerves and big serves over Ruud.

Quinn won in straight sets, winning the first set before a rain delay. The second set was decided by a tiebreaker where Quinn saved seven set points before defeating Ruud.

Quinn is ranked 56th. He is one of a growing list of professional tennis players who get experience in the college ranks before turning pro. Playing for the University of Georgia, Quinn won the NCAA singles championship in 2023.

Along with Frances Tiafoe and Leylah Fernandez, Quinn is a Lululemon brand ambassador.

In his first appearance at the 2026 Australian Open, he advanced to the third round.

Quinn is the currently tenth highest ranked American behind Taylor Fritz (7th in the world), Ben Shelton (9th), Tiafoe (20th), Learner Tien (21st), Tommy Paul (23rd), Brandon Nakashima (30th), Sebastian Korda (36th), Alex Michelsen (40th), and Jenson Brooksby (42nd).

He is coached by Brad Stine who has coached American tennis greats throughout the years including Jim Courier, Mardy Fish, and Tommy Paul who is currently coaching.

Quinn is very lucky to complete his second round match

The Miami Open has been deluged with rain. With play canceled on March 18, the tournament is feverishly trying to catch up by scheduling over 50 matches on Friday.

Quinn is lucky to get the completed match and win, and as of 5 PM EST, he is the only ATP player who is into the Round of 32 and weather permitting will play on Sunday, March 22.
