Apr. 19—GRAND FORKS — UND’s record-setting men’s tennis season is over.

The Fighting Hawks lost 4-0 to Denver in the Summit League championship Saturday at Denver Tennis Park.

The Pioneers, the league’s dominant team, will advance to the NCAA tournament.

UND’s season ends at 18-5.

The Fighting Hawks set program records for wins, longest winning streak (13) and reached the conference final for the first time as a Division-I program.

Denver got off to a fast start by winning the doubles point.

The Pioneers and Fighting Hawks split at the top two positions — UND’s Leandro Zgraggen and Ange-Kevin Koua won at No. 1 — so it came down to No. 3 doubles.

Denver’s Ryoma Mishiro and Raffaello Papajcik rallied from down a break to beat UND’s Jerall Yasin and Leo Galliano 6-3.

The Pioneers came out hot in singles.

Daniel Sancho Arbizu beat Zgraggen at No. 1 singles 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 singles. Papajcik beat Koua 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. Rikuto Yamaguchi beat Galliano at No. 3 singles.

The last three singles matches were unfinished.

UND’s Ethan Terry won the first set at No. 5 singles. The Fighting Hawks were down a set at No. 4 and No. 6 singles.

The Fighting Hawks finished second in the Summit League during the regular season behind Denver.
