Despite recent defeats, Venus Williams is approaching a remarkable longevity milestone previously set by Martina Navratilova.
Venus Williams returned to the BNP Paribas Open this week but suffered a first-round defeat to Diane Parry.
The American received a wildcard entry but was unable to advance, losing in three sets. Williams dropped the opening set before forcing a decider by winning a second-set tiebreak, yet Parry dominated the third set to seal the match 6–1.
The result continues a difficult start to the 2026 season, with Williams now having played five tour-level tournaments without recording a victory. However, the seven-time Grand Slam singles champion is quietly edging closer to a remarkable record in women’s tennis.
Williams closing in on Navratilova longevity milestone
At 43 years and eight months old, Williams is approaching a historic benchmark currently held by Martina Navratilova.
Navratilova holds the record for the longest span between a player’s first and last appearances on the WTA Tour. Her career stretched from her debut in Fort Lauderdale in 1973 until her final tournament in ’s-Hertogenbosch in 2005 — a span of 32 years and 107 days.
Williams began her own WTA journey in Oakland in 1994 at just 14 years old. Her recent appearance at Indian Wells came 31 years and 125 days after that debut, placing her second on the all-time list behind Navratilova.
If Williams competes around the same time in 2027, she would surpass Navratilova’s remarkable career span record.
Interestingly, Serena Williams also appears on that longevity list. Serena began her professional career at the Kremlin Cup in 1997 and played her final tournament at the US Open in 2022.
Venus expected to return at Miami Open
Williams is scheduled to play next at the Miami Open later this month after receiving another wildcard entry.
She will be hoping for a better outcome than her last appearance in Miami, where she retired from her opening match against Zhu Lin after just three games due to injury.
So far in 2026, Williams has suffered opening-round losses at the ASB Classic in Auckland against Magda Linette, at the Hobart International to Tatjana Maria, and at the Australian Open to Olga Danilovic after initially taking the first set.
Further defeats followed in Austin and at Indian Wells, leaving the American still searching for her first win of the season.
Even so, simply continuing to compete could soon place Williams alone at the top of one of tennis’s most extraordinary longevity records.
