The real (pathetic) reason Venus Williams and Leylah Fernandez did not play doubles at Indian Wells

While Venus Williams and Leylah Fernandez have both been eliminated in singles at Indian Wells, many tennis fans have been questioning why they did not play doubles.

Before the tournament, they were granted a wildcard entry for doubles.

However, they never made the draw. Some thought they had a change of heart or some physical reason, but the real reason is yet another strike against Indian Wells this year which has already made two blunders, and one pertained to Venus Williams.

An administrative error kept Williams and Fernandez out of the draw

The US Open quarterfinalists would have been a fan favorite, had they played, but an administrative error kept them out.

Open Court (a Canadian website) explained it as follows:

“The tournament made an error and failed to certify the doubles wild card entry of Venus Williams and Leylah Fernandez before the women’s doubles draw was made. We worked with the WTA supervisor to review all available options, but because the draw had already been made, the mistake could not be corrected,” was the statement from a tournament spokesperson.

“We have apologized to Venus, Leylah and their teams about the matter, and regret that our fans were not able to see this duo compete in Indian Wells this year.”

Venus Williams has a love/hate relationship with Indian Wells

This doubles mixup and the fact that Venus Williams was willing to stop play (and rightfully so) until she could get cold water to drink in her first round match probably has Williams feeling less happy thoughts about Indian Wells.

It is the tournament that both she and Serena boycotted for years amid racial tensions in 2001. Venus Williams is dealing with a rough start to her 2026 season, and these Indian Wells issues are not helping her cause.
