Everything is falling apart for former world No. 3 Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Tsitsipas, an Australian Open and French Open finalist, didn’t come into this year’s Wimbledon Championships with a ton of confidence. Nonetheless, most fans expected him to take care of his first-round matchup against French qualifier Valentin Royer. Instead, he went down 6-3, 6-2 before retiring with a back injury.
“I’m battling many wars these days,” Tsitsipas said following the loss. “It’s really painful to see myself in a situation like this. I feel like I’m left without answers. I don’t know. I’ve tried everything. I’ve done an incredible job with my fitness. I’ve done an incredible job with my physiotherapy, so I’ve maximized on everything that I possibly can do. Right now, I’m just absolutely left with no answers.”
According to Tsitsipas’ coach, he hasn’t done an “incredible job” with his preparation.
Speaking to the media this week, former Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic eviscerated Tsitsipas, saying he has never seen a more unprepared player in his life.
“He wants, but he doesn’t do anything. All ‘I want, I want’’ but I don’t see that progress. I was shocked. I have never seen a more unprepared player in my life. With this knee, I am three times more fit than him. This is really bad,” Ivanisevic said. “It’s simple and it’s not simple. I’ve talked to him a lot of times.”
Ivanisevic continued, “If he solves some things outside of tennis, then he has a chance and he’ll return to where he belongs, because he’s too good a player to be out of the top 10.”
Prior to joining forces with Tsitsipas this year, Ivanisevic worked with Novak Djokovic. Suffice to say, he knows what a Grand Slam champion looks like.
Tsitsipas can either listen to his Ivanisevic’s advice or scan the market for another coach. Either way, it’ll be fascinating to see how this situation plays out.
