Kournikova on the Clay
Kournikova rose to international prominence in the late 1990s, becoming one of the most recognizable figures in women’s tennis despite never winning a WTA singles title. Born in Moscow in 1981, she turned professional in 1995 and quickly gained attention with her athleticism, aggressive baseline game, and strong net play. Kournikova reached a career-high singles ranking of world No. 8 in 2000 and achieved notable results at Grand Slam tournaments, including semifinal appearances at Wimbledon in 1997 and 1998. Her early success established her as one of the top players of her generation and helped fuel a surge of global interest in women’s tennis.
While singles titles eluded her, Kournikova found significant success in doubles, where she truly excelled. Partnering with Martina Hingis, she won two Australian Open doubles titles in 1999 and 2002 and reached the world No. 1 doubles ranking. Chronic injuries, particularly to her back, ultimately shortened her career, leading to her retirement from professional tennis in 2003 at just 21 years old.
