Stars top Tigers to cap perfect week

The Western Boone tennis team knew it was going to be tough on Thursday.

The Stars welcomed in their cross-county rival in Lebanon, and it was their third match in three days.

But WeBo was up to the task, topping the Tigers 4-1 and improved to 11-1 on the season.

“I am happy with our guys,” Western Boone head coach Dustin Cunningham said. “It’s tough to win three matches in three nights. But it is something we may see later and the boys showed they have what it takes to win a sectional if we have those circumstances.”

The Stars got a win at No. 1 singles from Jon Rutherford, topping Owen Kincade 6-1, 6-1.

Logan Cripe topped Simon Kyker 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. At No. 1 doubles, Owen Oakley and Easton Nance stayed unbeaten with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Leo Johnson and Brayden Adams.

At No. 2 doubles, Burke Cavins and Zac Weesies defeated Jason Garrard and Kai Burcham 6-2, 7-6 (10-8).

Cunningham said Rutherford has been a player who has really stepped up for the Stars this year.

On Thursday he won his 50th career singles match for the Stars, and has 53 total wins.

He is also pleased with the way Oakley and Nance have continued to grow in their partnership on the doubles court, where they have yet to drop a set.

For Lebanon, Ian Kincade picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win over Jacob Collins at No. 2 singles.

“We moved our line-up around a little bit today, just to give some guys a chance at something new,” Lebanon head coach Sam Godby said. “I was happy with the way the guys responded to those changes, and we played really well in some spots.”

The Tigers host their tournament on Saturday.

Western Boone will have another busy week next week. They travel to North Montgomery on Tuesday to start another three matches in three day stretch.
