SAINT CLOUD — St. Cloud is sending Paige Tarrolly to the state tennis tournament for a third consecutive year.
Additionally, Foley (27-17) will be competing at the Class 1A team tournament after winning the Section 6-1A championship. The Falcons beat St. John’s Prep (2-11) and Osakis (15-25) in the quarterfinals and semifinals and Minnewaska (38-10) for the title Oct. 7. They will compete at the Minnesota state tennis tournament Oct. 21-24 at Reed-Sweatt Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
Section 8-3A
The St. Cloud Crush (31-13) had one player qualify individually for the first Class 3A state tournament. Tarrolly (23-4) won the Section 8-3A tournament Saturday, making a state tournament for the third consecutive season. The past two years, she qualified for the Class 2A tournament before the Minnesota State High School League expanded tennis to three classes this season. Her first match will be Oct. 23 at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
Tarrolly beat St. Michael-Albertville (23-15) senior Megan Beack (13-10) in the section final 6-3 and 7-5 after three playoff matches as the No. 1 seed. She defeated another Knight in the semifinal after matches against opponents from Elk River (52-11) and Brainerd (26-22). Tarrolly only allowed one opponent besides Beack to win more than two games — Elks seventh grader Leighton Wisiewski (22-10).
Elk River eliminated St. Cloud from the section team tournament on Sept. 30 by a score of 6-1, with eighth grader Olivia Erickson (11-11) picking up the Crush’s only win. The Crush previously beat STMA in the quarterfinals, and Alexandria (44-11) beat Elk River in the championship.
Crush sophomore June Streit (17-9) competed in section singles as the seventh seed, winning her first match against Monticello (31-16) senior Madelyn Barrow (17-8). But Streit lost her quarterfinal match with both sets going 7-5 to Brainerd’s (26-22) Taryn Mithun (19-14).
Likewise, the Crush doubles team of sophomores Sophia Erickson (15-11) and Bella Newbauer (14-12) won their first match of the section tournament, a play-in versus a pair from STMA, but Erickson and Newbauer lost in the quarterfinals to Bemidji (25-16) by scores of 7-5 and 7-5. Another doubles team from STMA advanced past St. Cloud sophomore Kayla Cai (18-3) and eighth grader Reese Kenning (11-6) in their play-in.
Section 6-1A
Foley beat Minnewaska in the Section 6-1A team championship 4-3 on Sept. 29, with all three Falcon doubles teams coming up with a W. Junior Lydia Anderson (21-8) was the only singles win as senior Olivia Sauer (7-18) and sophomore Alaina Miller (20-9) fell in two sets. Anderson beat her opponent 7-6 (5), 6-4). Foley’s doubles pairings for the championship were senior Ashlyn Gapinski (18-11) and junior Jaida Fleck (18-11), senior Hailey Mellgren (12-12) and sophomore Abby Kampa (17-7), and senior Sage Greenwaldt (17-7) and eighth grader Lexi Garceau (15-8). Gapinski and Fleck won 7-6 (3), 6-2, Mellgren and Kampa won 6-3, 6-1, and Greenwaldt and Garceau won 6-4, 6-3.
Greenwaldt and Sauer also competed in solos in Section 6-1A. Both won their first-round matchups but lost in the quarterfinals. Greenwaldt won only one game, against the section singles champion from Osakis, while Sauer lost 6-3, 6-2 to a player from Minnewaska.
St. John’s Prep, which was swept by Foley in the quarterfinals of the team competition, sent two solo athletes to the section playoffs. Senior Brianna Chalich (6-12) won her play-in game but lost in the first round. Freshman Varrsha Chenthuren (2-15) lost her first-round match to Sauer.
In doubles, Foley had two teams make the semifinals, but both lost and faced each other in the third-place match. Anderson and Miller came out ahead of Gapinski and Fleck 6-3, 6-2. Both teams previously won two matches in the tournament, including Gapinski and Fleck eliminating SJP senior Anna Kremer (6-10) and sophomore Leah Bechtold (4-13) in the first round. Johnnies doubles sophomores Joella Raeker (8-9) and Lucy Bechtold (2-14) won their play-in match against a team from Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa (2-13), but lost in the first round to the doubles champions.

Area teams to fall in the Section 8-2A tournament were Becker (37-13), Sartell-St. Stephen (23-23), ROCORI (5-13), and Sauk Rapids-Rice (13-21). The Bulldogs eliminated the Spartans 7-0 in the quarterfinals and advanced to the championship, where they were defeated by No. 1 seed Fergus Falls (22-22). In the semifinal, Becker beat the Sabres’ quarterfinal opponent, Perham/New York Mills (19-5). Sartell was swept in the round by Sauk Rapids. The Otters beat the Storm.
Becker sophomore Gracie Conzemius (24-7) picked up a solo win in the title match Friday, and junior Sami Leaders and sophomore Bryn Dahlhimer won their doubles match. They were Becker’s only wins.
Conzemius nearly made the Class 2A tournament as an individual, advancing to the section semifinals and winning the third-place match 6-4, 6-2. In the semifinal, she was defeated by solo champion Kaia Anderson (28-0), a senior from P/NYM.
