The Spaniard foresaw Gauff becoming a multi-Grand Slam champion — and she has delivered early

Rafael Nadal has long been regarded as one of tennis’ greatest competitors, and even after stepping away from the sport in 2024, his influence continues to be felt.

Beyond his achievements on court, Nadal has consistently shown a strong interest in the next generation, particularly through his academy and his public support for emerging talents.

Back in 2022, one of those talents stood out to him more than most — Coco Gauff.

Speaking during Wimbledon in 2022, shortly after winning Roland Garros and following Gauff’s defeat in the French Open final, Nadal spoke highly of the young American.

“I like her the way that she talks to the crowd, to the press at the end of the matches. She’s fresh. She’s natural. Looks very mature in her thoughts,” he said.

He also highlighted her mentality on court, drawing parallels with his own competitive style. “Yeah, I think she is a fighter. I like the way that she plays. She fights for every ball. Even sometimes when she’s not playing that well, she keeps fighting till the end, running for every ball.”

Nadal then made a clear prediction about her future: “If she’s able just to improve a little bit with this physical performance that she has, probably we’ll talk about the player that she will be: multi-Grand Slam winner.”

That projection has already materialised, with Gauff securing two major titles at just 22 years old.

How Coco Gauff turned potential into Grand Slam success

Gauff’s development since that moment has reinforced Nadal’s early assessment. Despite ongoing inconsistencies — particularly with her serve — she has remained one of the most competitive players on tour.

Her first Grand Slam breakthrough came at the US Open, where she defeated Aryna Sabalenka in the final after navigating a demanding draw that included Mirra Andreeva, Jelena Ostapenko, Caroline Wozniacki and Karolina Muchová.

She followed that up with another major title at the 2025 French Open, once again overcoming Sabalenka in the final. Compared to her US Open run, the path was less demanding, with Madison Keys representing the most significant challenge prior to the final.

While there are still technical areas to refine — notably her forehand and serve — Gauff’s trajectory suggests further titles are a matter of when, not if, fully validating Nadal’s early prediction about her future at the top of the sport.
