Jodar defeats Trungelliti in straight sets

Rafael Jodar claimed his first ATP Tour title on Sunday with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Marco Trungelliti in the final of the Marrakech Open.

The Spanish teenager made a strong impression in his first tournament of the year, dropping only one set on his way to the trophy.

Despite Trungelliti’s lack of silverware, he has seen positive movement in the rankings this year and is projected to enter the world’s top 100 for the first time. However, it was Jodar who held his nerve during key moments to take control early and maintain momentum throughout.

The Spaniard landed 75 per cent of his first serves and showed a reliable touch around the net, winning 17 out of 21 points there. His composure was also notable, not facing a single break point during the match while earning four chances to break himself.

The title is expected to boost Jodar into the world’s top 120 when updated rankings are released. It’s another step forward for a player already carrying significant expectations within Spanish tennis circles.

Rafael Jodar follows Carlos Alcaraz’s path

According to respected tennis journalist Jose Morgado, Jodar is just the 11th teenager in this decade to lift an ATP title.

The teenager, who comes from Madrid, has now joined an elite group that includes Alcaraz, Sinner, Holger Rune and Joao Fonseca – all of whom achieved the feat before turning 20.

Alcaraz managed nine ATP wins before hitting that milestone. But comparing Jodar to those numbers isn’t really fair. Alcaraz is a special case – a once-in-a-generation talent destined for greatness. What Jodar has accomplished stands well on its own.

The Spaniard had looked impressive at times throughout last season. And this win shows that he’s more than just another promising name; there’s real substance behind the hype.

This tournament run highlighted how quickly he’s maturing on court. Not many teenagers have the game or composure to close out a title at this level. This success in Marrakech also saw him jump up to No. 55 in the world rankings.

Alcaraz shows support after Jodar’s title win

Jodar also received a message from Alcaraz, who took to his Instagram story to congratulate the youngster.

The post said: “Great job, Rafa Jodar! Congratulations! Let’s go!”

Jodar will skip the Monte Carlo Masters and is expected to return for the Barcelona Open, which starts on April 11.

Alcaraz will open his Monte Carlo campaign on Tuesday. After receiving a bye in the opening round, he will face either Sebastian Baez or Stan Wawrinka in his first match.
