Jack Draper reached the quarter-finals of the HSBC Championships on Wednesday after coming back from a set down to beat Alexei Popyrin of Australia.

The British No 1 lost the opening set 6-3 but took the second 6-2 before clinching victory in a third-set tie-break.

Draper is stepping up his preparations for Wimbledon after ending the clay-court season with a fourth-round defeat by Alexander Bublik at the French Open.

The 23-year-old, who won his opening match at Queen’s Club against Jenson Brooksby of the United States 6-3, 6-1, also reached the quarter-finals in West Kensington last year.

Draper will now face Brandon Nakashima in the last eight on Friday, after the American knocked out Briton Dan Evans in straight sets on Wednesday.

Evans had beaten Frances Tiafoe 7-5, 6-2 in the opening round but made it four losses from five meetings against Nakashima, having also lost to the American at Queen’s last year.

The tournament’s top seed Carlos Alcaraz is in action in the round of 16 on Thursday, taking on fellow Spaniard Jaume Munar. The world No 2 beat Australian Adam Walton in straight sets in the opening round.
