Oregon Ducks Weekend Sports Roundup

Beach Volleyball vs. Portland

Beach volleyball got to stay home this weekend after being on the road for tournaments the whole first month of the season. Don’t look now, but Oregon beach volleyball has a winning record having improved to 11-10 after sweeping four games against the Pilots. On Friday (senior day) in Eugene the Ducks didn’t even surrender a match throughout the double header, though a few did go to a decisive third set. Sunday’s double header took place in the Rose City and Portland got a single victory in the morning and a second in the afternoon. The most dramatic match was the last to finish as the Ducks’ AJ Slojkowski/Kendall Clark had to go to extra points in the third set to decide the final score.

The Ducks take their winning record into an idle week before heading east for the Boise State Beach Classic (despite Boise not being a state nor having a beach) April 3-4.

Men’s Tennis @ washington

The Ducks travelled north to face their conference rivals on Saturday and got off to a slow start. The two teams split the first two doubles matches with Matthew Burton/Pierre Mouesca providing Oregon a win. The third doubles match went to the hosts to give them a 1-0 lead. Oregon rallied in singles play and didn’t allow the northern school to win even a lone match in singles play. Russell Soohoo, Vlad Brezau, and Matthew Burton tame their pups in straight sets (though Soohoo did need extra games to prevail in his first set 7-5). The remaining matches all extended to a third set and the home team would need to be perfect to pull off a comeback. Pierre Mouesca wouldn’t let them have that hope, coming back to win his match 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 to close out the meet.

The men will be back on the road this week at Wisconsin on Friday then at Nebraska on Sunday.

Women’s Tennis @ Iowa and Nebraska

The Ducks took their #64 ranking on the road for a conference meetup with #41 Iowa on Friday. The Hawkeyes took the first doubles match but Tilde Jagare/Olivia Symons and Hinata Furutani/Juliet Santitto took the the next two for Oregon to secure the pivotal doubles point. When singles play began the Hawkeyes notched the first two matches in straight sets, leaving them ahead in the score 2-1 as each remaining match stretched to a third set. Furutani, Patsy Daughters, and Bridget Mihulka all won their matches in three sets (as Virginia Crocker was tied 4-4 in the decisive set when play was ended) to give Oregon a ranked win away from home.

After a day to travel Oregon faced Nebraska in Lincoln on Sunday. Once again the pairs of Jagare/Symons and Furutani/Santitto secured the doubles point for the Ducks. Jagare and Symons took two of the first three singles matches to give Oregon a commanding 3-1 lead. The Ducks only needed one of the remaining matches to go their way, but on their home courts the Cornhuskers wouldn’t allow it. Furutani even took her third set to an extra game, but couldn’t get the last point needed for the visitors to escape with a win. It was a disappointing loss following such an impressive showing in Iowa City.

The Ducks will look to regroup this week before taking on Illinois (Friday) and Northwestern (Sunday) at the Student Tennis Center in Eugene.

Track and Field @ PNW Open

Spring has sprung and that means outdoor season for Oregon track and field. The Ducks went up the road to Corvallis to compete in the Pacific Northwest Open. Over the course of Friday and Saturday the throws group (specifically discus, javelin, and shotput) for both men and women competed and had three 1-2 finishes. Highlights included top-10 all time Oregon performances in women’s discus by Marie JosĂ©e Bovele-Linaka (#8) and Alicia Khunou (#10).
