Olentangy Berlin junior Soleil Cordell won her first Division I district girls tennis championship Oct. 11 at Upper Arlington, sweeping two matches.
Cordell, last year’s district and state runner-up, defeated Watkins Memorial junior Nora Grennan 6-0, 6-1 in a semifinal before sweeping UA junior Alexa Roth 6-1, 6-0.
Cordell, who is 23-0 this season and has not lost a set, had been district runner-up to 2025 Dublin Coffman graduate Lauren Burkett each of the past two years.
Roth advanced to the final by sweeping Worthington Kilbourne sophomore Addi Bennington 6-2, 6-1.
Bennington came from behind to beat Grennan 5-7, 6-0, 6-2 for third place.
The top four finishers in singles and doubles advanced to state Oct. 16 and 17 at Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason. Those berths were secured during the first day of district play Oct. 8.
In doubles, UA seniors Dani Ball and Sylvie Lederer defeated Olentangy Orange juniors Aaria Gala and Zoe Haar 6-1, 6-1 for their first district title.
Ball and Lederer advanced with a 6-1, 6-0 semifinal win over Coffman senior Rachanna Senthil and junior Eknoor Kaur.
In the other semifinal, Gala and Haar outlasted UA senior Emily Lin and junior Nancy Li 7-5, 6-3.
Li and Lin edged Kaur and Senthil 6-1, 0-6, 7-6 (7-4) for third place.
Columbus Academy, CSG players win Division II district titles
In the Division II district tournament at Academy, the host Vikings’ Gabrielle Stewart and Ella Tsao won the doubles championship and Columbus School for Girls junior Iva Karagirova captured her first singles title.
Stewart, a junior, and Tsao, a sophomore, defeated CSG seniors Victoria Dizon and Priya Mehta 6-3, 6-2 in the doubles final. Stewart and Tsao are making their first trips to state.
Karagirova, a two-time state qualifier, edged Worthington Christian junior Elise Bourgeois 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 in the singles final.
The district champion and runner-up in singles and doubles advanced to state.
No third-place matches were played.
