Novak Djokovic’s early exit from the Madrid Open 2025 has sparked fresh discussions about the Serbian star’s future. After the surprising defeat, Djokovic openly reflected on the possibility of not returning to Madrid: “It could be. I’m not sure if I’ll come back. Maybe not as a player. I hope it’s not, but it could be,” he said.
Coming into the Madrid Open, Djokovic had endured a challenging stretch, suffering a painful loss to Jakob Mensik in the Miami Open final and an early defeat to Alejandro Tabilo at the Monte Carlo Masters. While previous setbacks were partly attributed to an eye infection, Djokovic this time appeared sluggish and out of rhythm, raising further questions about his form.
Acknowledging the difficult phase, Djokovic spoke candidly about adjusting to a “new reality” in his professional tennis career. “It’s a completely different feeling after 20-plus years of professional tennis. Now I’m just trying to win a match or two and not necessarily thinking about titles,” the world-renowned champion explained.
Despite his struggles, Djokovic reaffirmed his focus on Grand Slam events, particularly Roland Garros. However, he admitted uncertainty about his performance: “I’m not sure if I’ll be able to play my best tennis there, but I’ll do my best.”
Meanwhile, Matteo Arnaldi, ranked No. 44, showcased impressive resilience and a powerful forehand to secure the win against Djokovic. This loss adds to a season already marked by early exits and a visible transition in Djokovic’s illustrious career.
Remaining determined to adapt, Djokovic concluded: “You have to embrace the situation and make the best out of it.”
