Naomi Osakaâs 2026 season is finally gathering momentum after an injury cut short what looked to be a strong start at the Australian Open.
Back to full fitness, she has pushed her way into the Indian Wells Round of 16 and lined up a fascinating match-up in the process.
After seeing off Victoria Jiménez Kasintseva and Camila Osorio, Osaka now faces the challenge of taking on Aryna Sabalenka.
But the 28-year-old is not shying away from the contest. If anything, she seems excited by it.
Naomi Osaka looks ahead to her Indian Wells clash with Aryna Sabalenka
It is a match-up fans have not seen much of in recent years, but two of the biggest hitters in the game are finally set to meet.
With the current world number one taking on a former world number one, there is plenty on the line as both players aim for a place in the Indian Wells quarter-finals.
Asked about facing Sabalenka, Osaka did not hide her enthusiasm for the challenge.
She said: âI mean, for me, itâs really exciting. I have watched her, I donât want to say âgrow over the years,â because I think sheâs only a little bit younger than me and I feel like an old person, but yeah, I have watched her grow over the years.
âObviously sheâs so consistent, sheâs the No. 1 player in the world and itâs, for me, very motivating. Iâm excited to play her, and Iâm looking forward to it a lot.â
The Japanese star then spoke with Tennis Channel afterwards and added: âFor me, they are the most fun. When I was younger, I used to only show up for big matches like this so this is what I practice for and just really excited to see what Iâm able to do.â
