Learner Tien advances to Indian Wells quarterfinals

Southern California native Learner Tien is into the quarterfinals for the first time at a Masters 1000 tournament, with a gutsy 4-6, 6-1, 7-6(4) win over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain on Tuesday at Indian Wells.

In the third set, Tien saved two match points to eventually force the tiebreak. The win was the first of his pro career after saving a match point.

On the other side, the loss was the 13th for Davidovich Fokina after holding match point.

Tien, who grew up coming to the BNP Paribas Open each year, has the Stadium 1 crowd firmly behind him throughout the match. He’ll now move onto the quarterfinals to face either Jannik Sinner or Joao Fonseca.

Arthur Fils (30) def. Felix Auger-Aliassime (9), 6-3, 7-6(9): Fils became just the third French man to reach consecutive Indian Wells quarterfinals Tuesday with his upset of Auger-Aliassime.

Fils rallied from down 5-0 in the second set tiebreak, saving five set points in the process. The 21-year-old rising star will now face fourth-seeded Alexander Zverev next.
