Jessica Pegula says she believes we will see Serena Williams back on court soon.

Williams hasn’t played professionally since the 2022 US Open, a match widely seen at the time as her final bow.

The 23-time Grand Slam winner has since re-entered the drug testing pool, and talk of a comeback has only grown louder.

That speculation picked up even more after video surfaced of Williams hitting with Alycia Parks. Now, Pegula has weighed in with her own guess on when we might see her back in action.

Pegula spoke with Access Hollywood before the start of Indian Wells and was asked if there’s been much talk in the WTA locker room about a possible Williams comeback.

“There has been,” Pegula replied. “No-one really knows. She’s keeping us on our toes, which isn’t a surprise because it’s Serena.

“I just saw a video, like yesterday, of her hitting with another player, and I kind of feel like she’s thinking about coming back.

“I could definitely see her maybe playing doubles with Venus, because Venus is still playing. I don’t know if she will play singles, but maybe working her way back to singles possibly more in the US swing leading up to the US Open.”

Williams wasn’t happy with how her last appearance at Wimbledon went after being beaten by Harmony Tan in the opening round and may now be looking to set that right this summer.

Jessica Pegula recalls her only match against Serena Williams

Even though their careers overlapped for a decade, Pegula and Williams faced each other just once.

That meeting came in the final of the 2020 ASB Classic in Auckland, where Williams claimed a 6-3, 6-4 victory.

The win turned out to be significant: it was both the last title and last final of Williams’ career before she stepped away from tennis more than two years later.

With talk growing about a possible return to the tour, there’s increasing speculation that Pegula could get another shot at facing Williams again.

But before any potential rematch with Serena comes into play, Pegula will be focused on carrying her momentum from Dubai into Indian Wells.

Pegula is set to open her campaign against either Tereza Valentova or Donna Vekic on Saturday, March 7.
