Women’s tennis in America has shown real growth over the past year, with multiple players now ranked among the top 10 on the WTA Tour.

Coco Gauff leads the way at world number three, while there are currently three Americans inside the top 10.

Last year saw two American women capture Grand Slam titles, with Gauff winning Roland Garros and Madison Keys taking her first major at the Australian Open.

Jessica Pegula has shared her thoughts on where American tennis stands at the moment, reflecting on its current strength.

Pegula has been impressive early in the 2026 season, positioning herself as a real contender for a first Grand Slam title.

She returned to the top five after capturing another WTA 1000 title at the Dubai Tennis Championships.

Pegula credits the strong American presence on tour as motivation to keep pushing forward in her own career.

Speaking to the Charleston Open, Pegula said: “Our depth in the U.S. is pretty crazy right now. I feel like every time I go deep, there’s multiple Americans that are there. It’s been incredible.”

“I’m glad that I’ve been able to be a part of this era of all these girls doing really well in the States. I know it’s definitely motivated me to see them do well. It’s an honor to be a part of this amazing group.”

Pegula also highlighted Iva Jovic as one of the most promising young players coming through the ranks.

“There’s a lot of young ones like Iva that are coming up, whom I’m way older than, which is really depressing. [Laughs.] I’m glad I’m able to inspire and show that next generation that’s coming up.”

Iva Jovic enjoyed a breakout year in 2025, which brought her maiden WTA title, and she reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open at the start of 2026.

Jessica Pegula closing in on Grand Slam success

Pegula hasn’t always been in the spotlight, but over the last few seasons, she’s been edging closer to a major breakthrough.

Her best run came at the 2024 US Open, where she reached the final before falling to Aryna Sabalenka.

While another final appearance has eluded her since then, Pegula recently made it back to the Australian Open semi-finals. It feels like she’s right on the verge of making that next step.

The American seems to be building towards her first Grand Slam title, though age isn’t exactly on her side. She’s now 32 and might not have many more opportunities left at this level.
