Jannik Sinner is coming off a surprising defeat in his most recent ATP Tour appearance.

The Italian entered the Qatar Open – just his second tournament of 2026 – after falling short in his title defence at the Australian Open.

He had a solid start in Doha, getting past Tomas Machac and Alexei Popyrin, but fell to Jakub Mensik in the quarter-finals.

After that exit, the world number two chose to skip both the Dubai Tennis Championships and the Mexican Open in Acapulco.

Even so, he did not waste time getting set for his next event. Sinner boarded an early flight to kick off his next stretch on tour.

According to a report from La Gazzetta dello Sport, Sinner flew out to California for the Indian Wells Open the night after he was knocked out in Doha.

Sinner has a real chance to gain ground on Carlos Alcaraz at Indian Wells. He missed last year’s event because of a three-month suspension, meaning he has no points to defend.

While the 24-year-old Italian was sidelined, Alcaraz reached the semi-finals before losing to eventual champion Jack Draper, picking up 400 points along the way.

The Spaniard currently holds a total of 13,550 ATP points. Sinner is second with 10,400 points.

Even though Indian Wells could help get his season on track, it is worth noting that the world number two will be without coach Simone Vagnozzi for the tournament.

Vagnozzi returned home and will subsequently meet Sinner and Darren Cahill in Miami for the second phase of the Sunshine Double.

The 24-year-old is currently sitting on a win-loss record of 7-2 this season after also falling short against Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open semi-finals.

If he goes all the way in Indian Wells, it will mark his 25th title at Tour level, just one behind Alcaraz.
