Dimitrov ends losing streak, sets up clash with Alcaraz at Indian Wells

Grigor Dimitrov has finally put a stop to his early-season struggles, picking up a win in the opening round of the Indian Wells Open.

The Bulgarian had dropped three straight matches to start 2026 but managed to get past Terence Atmane, a Cincinnati Open semifinalist, in three sets – 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.

Now comes an even bigger challenge. In the second round of this ATP Masters 1000 event, Dimitrov will face world number one Carlos Alcaraz.

Alcaraz has been untouchable so far in 2026, winning both the Australian Open and Qatar Open without dropping a match.

Looking ahead to their meeting, Dimitrov said he’s hoping to unsettle the youngest player ever to complete the Career Grand Slam.

Grigor Dimitrov shares his thoughts ahead of Carlos Alcaraz showdown

Speaking to Tennis Channel about his upcoming match against Alcaraz, Dimitrov said: “Of course it’s going to be a tough match. Let’s see it for what it is.

“Of course it’s going to be a tough match. Let’s see it for what it is.

“Of course, I mean, I love watching him play. He’s just crushing the ball. I love him, you know, in a positive way.

“But at the same time, these are the moments where, for me, the fun part begins. It’s like thinking about what I can do differently, or something new or interesting that could potentially not only rattle him but put him in a position where he doesn’t really like it.

“That’s what I’m saying, you just never know how the game will unfold because it’s all in your hands.

“I believe if I do the right things and cut down on a few mistakes here and there, something good can come out of it. So I’m going to come out with that mindset and just stay locked in.”

Dimitrov is 4-2 behind against Alcaraz

Dimitrov has faced Alcaraz six times on the ATP Tour before and currently trails 4-2 in their head-to-head record.

The Spaniard took their first three encounters across all surfaces: hard court at the 2022 Paris Masters, clay at the Madrid Open in 2023 and grass at Queen’s later that year.

Dimitrov got his first win over Alcaraz after coming from behind at the Shanghai Masters round of 16 in 2023. He then made it two straight wins against Alcaraz by defeating him 6-2, 6-4 at the Miami Open last season.

Their most recent meeting came again at Indian Wells last year when Alcaraz swept past Dimitrov without any issues by a score of 6-1 6-1.
