Iga Swiatek splits with coach after shock Miami Open defeat

Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek has announced she has parted company with her coach, Wim Fissette, following her unexpected first-round elimination at the Miami Open.

The world No 3 confirmed the split on Monday via an Instagram post.

Swiatek, who secured her maiden Wimbledon title last year under Fissette’s guidance, stated she had “decided to take a different path.”

She expressed gratitude for their time together, adding: “I’m grateful for his support, experience, and everything we achieved together — including one of my biggest dreams in sport.”

The 24-year-old Polish star, a winner of six Grand Slam titles, suffered a three-set defeat to world No. 50 Magda Linette in Miami last week.

This loss marked a significant moment, ending her remarkable run of 73 consecutive opening-round victories on tour.

Reflecting on the tournament, Swiatek admitted: “Miami was challenging for me. I feel disappointment, bitterness and responsibility for my performance on the court of course.”

While her coaching role changes, Swiatek confirmed the rest of her team would remain intact.

She added: “I know there are many questions, but l’ll let you know what’s next at the right time. I’m taking a moment to take care of myself, process this experience, and prepare for a new chapter.”

Fissette boasts an impressive coaching CV, having previously worked with high-profile players such as Naomi Osaka, Kim Clijsters and Victoria Azarenka.

Swiatek has opted to make the decision ahead of clay-court season getting underway next month.

This is traditionally the Pole’s favourite surface, having won the French Open on no fewer than four occasions.

This included a run of three straight titles from 2022 to 2024, before she was beaten by Aryna Sabalenka in the semi-finals last year.

Swiatek bounced back from that loss quickly, as she won her maiden Wimbledon title just weeks later with a dominant victory over Amanda Anisimova in the final.
