Hononegah tennis freshman Erica Flohr, doubles team favored to get to state

The girls tennis season has reached the backstretch, and Hononegah appears to be the team to keep an eye on the most.

All of the Rockford-area stars are set for this weekend’s sectionals, hoping to lock down one of those spots for the state tennis tournament. The top four singles and top four doubles teams advance to state.

But Hononegah dominated last weekend’s NIC-10 tennis championships, winning the No. 1 singles and No. 1 and No. 2 doubles titles at the varsity level, and sweeping all four at the junior varsity level. They showed that they could do some damage this postseason.

“Our girls are really looking forward to sectionals this year,” Hononegah head coach John Terrence said. “Obviously we’re hoping to get some singles and doubles teams down to state. This is when it gets fun.”

The Hononegah girls tennis team celebrated with its trophy after winning the NIC-10 girls tennis championship on Oct. 4, 2025, in Rockford.

Hononegah’s star freshman Erica Flohr has rolled through her first high school season. She took control at the NIC-10 meet, winning the No. 1 singles title on her first try. Now she’ll see what she can do at sectionals.

Hononegah’s No. 1 doubles team of Lacey Floss and Harper Powell qualified for state last year, and they powered their way to the NIC-10 title at No. 1 doubles last week as well. Now they’re ready for another go-around at state.

Harper Powell and Lacey Foss, star tennis players for Hononegah High School, are pictured Aug. 11, 2025, at the Jefferson Street Bridge in Rockford.

The state tourney will be held from Oct. 23-25 at Hersey High School as well as the District 214, 211 and 220 tennis courts. The championship and medal rounds will all be at Hersey on Saturday.

“We’re hoping for a long weekend,” Terrence said.

And Hononegah will not be alone as it tracks down state bids. These other Rockford-area teams will be joined by DeKalb, Hampshire and Huntley at the 2A Guilford Sectional: Auburn; East; Guilford; Jefferson; and Harlem.

Belvidere North junior Leilani Mora made it to state in 2A singles last year, but she didn’t place. Same with Guilford junior Yeva Ksenafontova, who was at state in doubles last year. Auburn’s doubles team of Taylor Buhl and Aida Dummer qualified last year, as did Harlem’s doubles team of Ana Becevic and Melina Coletta.

Any Rockford-area state qualifiers out of 1A will be first-time qualifiers this year, however, except for Mora, if she makes it through again. North is down in 1A this year.

The 1A teams will take part in the Rochelle Sectional, where Rockford-area teams from Belvidere; Belvidere North; Freeport; Rochelle; Boylan; Rockford Lutheran; and Rockford Christian will compete.
