Holger Runeâs tennis career was hit hard by an Achilles injury picked up at the Stockholm Open, putting a halt to his rise through the rankings.
Even though heâs been sidelined, Rune has stayed upbeat and regularly shares training clips to show fans heâs still putting in the work.
His time off has seen him drop to world number 27, but thereâs a chance now for him to start building his ranking back up.
The ATP Tour has confirmed that Rune will be returning to competition for the first time since October.
Holger Rune set for ATP comeback
Rune is set to play at the ATP 500 Hamburg Open, which runs from May 16th to 23rd.
Heâll be joining Felix Auger-Aliassime, Alexander Zverev, and defending champion Flavio Cobolli in a strong field for the German event.
The Dane last appeared in Hamburg back in 2024, reaching the quarter-finals before retiring against Arthur Fils.
He has had some notable results on clay, including a win over Carlos Alcaraz in the Barcelona Open final last year.
He has also reached two consecutive Roland Garros quarter-finals, in 2022 and again in 2023.
Having climbed as high as world number four earlier in his career, Rune will be hoping to regain that form as he works his way back up the rankings.
How many points is Holger Rune defending on clay?
The clay season should offer a good chance for Rune to gain ground in the rankings, given his results from last year were not especially strong.
The Dane didnât get beyond the third round at either Madrid or Rome last year, so there wonât be much pressure on him to defend big points early on.
Similarly, he only made it to the fourth round of Roland Garros in 2025, so an early exit this time wouldnât cost him too many points either.
He currently holds 1620 ranking points, keeping him ahead of players like Jack Draper, Fils, and Joao Fonseca.
Sitting at world number 27 means heâll still benefit from seeded entry into Masters events and automatic spots in Grand Slams. It gives him a solid foundation to build from as he returns to full competition.
