The 2025 Wimbledon ladies’ singles final had looked likely to be a competitive, energy-sapping battle in the rather intense heat of a rare London heatwave.

Instead, the match was over in barely an hour as Iga Swiatek deal Amanda Anisimova a chastening defeat on Centre Court.

Anisimova had defeated world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinals and had spoken of her pride at reaching a first major final just two years after taking an extended break from tennis.

Swiatek defeated Olympic champion Belinda Bencic in her semifinal, winning the second set without dropping a game. She continued that form into the final on Saturday as, astonishingly, she did not allow Anisimova to get onto the scoreboard in the hour they spent on court.

Has such a result been seen before? The Sporting News looks through the archives.

Has there been a double bagel in a tennis grand slam final before?

Only twice before has a women’s grand-slam singles final ended in one player winning 18 straight games.

It happened in the 2025 Wimbledon final, as Iga Swiatek defeated Amanda Anisimova 6-0 6-0 in only 58 minutes. The only previous time during the Open Era (so, since 1968) was in the French Open final of 1988, when the great Steffi Graf beat Natasha Zvereva. Prior to that, Dorothea Lambert-Chambers defeated Dora Boothby without dropping a game at the Wimbledon championships of 1911.

What is a bagel in tennis?

In tennis, a bagel is when a set ends in a 6-0 scoreline. The term comes from the fact that a zero looks a bit like a bagel. Former players Harold Solomon and Eddie Dibbs are credited with coming up with the phrase.

A double bagel is when a two-set match ends with one player winning every game. A triple bagel is when it happens in a five-set contest, which is statistically much more unlikely.

Interestingly, Swiatek was the first player to win the final of a WTA 1000 tournament with a double bagel, beating former world No. 1 Karolina Pliskova in Rome in 2021.
