H.S. ROUNDUP: Nantucket boys tennis pulls off first round playoff upset over Rockland

The MIAA state tournament is officially underway. There were eight tennis teams (five boys and three girls) with a chance at the Round of 16 on the line.

Sandwich girls were the only team that played in a preliminary game.

See which teams advanced and whose season came to an end.

Boys Tennis

Div. 4, Round of 32: No. 3 Monomoy 5, No. 30 Barlett 0: The Sharks (16-3) started off their playoff run with a sweep.

Roman Pavluchenko defeated AJ Herman in first singles (6-2, 6-1), Ryan Casey beat Evylt Piwowarczyk in second singles (6-0, 6-1), and Zack Shields won third singles (6-1, 6-2) over Jason Blaisdell for Monomoy.

Blake Noonan and Nick Hadden defeated Aiden Cruz and Evan Colon in first doubles (6-2, 6-1), while Ethan Seufert and Tom Hereford beat Brendan Bui and Josh Torres in first doubles (6-0, 6-2).

Div. 4, Round of 32: No. 18 Nantucket 4, No. 15 Rockland 1: The Whalers (6-10) pulled off a first round upset on the road to move on to face No. 2 Lynnfield in the Round of 16.

Div. 3, Round of 32: No. 8 Holliston 5, No. 25 Nauset 0: The Warriors (5-12) season came to an in the first round of the postseason.

Div. 3, Round of 32: No. 7 Cape Cod Academy 4, No. 26 Pembroke 1: The Seahawks (19-0) continued their unbeaten season with a victory in the first round.

Ben Catalano defeated Jason Dibella in first singles (6-1, 6-0), and Ayden Naydenov beat Tyler Smith in second singles (6-3, 6-3) for Cape Cod Academy.

Connor Hall and Garrett Wilson beat Josh Stokinger and Joe Hoban in first doubles (6-0, 6-1), while Henry Daigle and Rowan Lewison defeated Alex Anninos and Aidan Donahue in second doubles (6-3, 6-1).

Girls Tennis

Div. 3, Preliminary Round: No. 27 Sandwich 4, No. 38 North Middlesex 1: The Blue Knights (10-10) won their prelim match to move on to the Round of 32 to face No. 6 Newburyport.

Abby Binienda beat Rebekah Sylvester in first singles (6-1, 6-3), while Cora Tedeschi defeated Ava Stuart in third singles (3-6, 6-4, 10-7) for Sandwich.

Sadie Clarkin and Casey Pestelli defeated Zoe Aster and Olivia Rowley in first doubles (6-2, 6-0), and Tenley Rothera and Lauren Meyer beat Mollie Anderson and Lauren Allen in second doubles (6-1, 6-3).

Div. 4, Round of 32: No. 3 Monomoy 5, No. 30 Tyngsborough 0: The Sharks (15-4) swept their fourth straight opponent as they started their tournament run with a win.

Div. 4, Round of 32: No. 22 Amesbury 3, No. 11 Mashpee 2: One of the best seasons in Falcons (12-4) program history has concluded with a first round playoff exit.

Tuesday’s results

Girls Tennis

Div. 4, Round of 32: No. 16 Bourne 4, No. 17 Mount Greylock Reg. 1: The Lady Canalmen (8-11) started their playoff run with a victory. Ainsley Hopwood beat Molly Karampatsos in first singles (6-0, 6-0), while Zoe Noonan won third singles by forfeit for Bourne.

Lily Russell and Sofia Halunen beat Tiffany Gonzales and Alex Franz in first doubles, and Addie Dion and Ella Swierkowski won second doubles by forfeit.

Boys Tennis

Div. 4, Round of 32: No. 6 Sturgis West 5, No. 27 Seekonk 0: The Navigators (9-2) kicked of their playoffs with a sweep win. Ray Zhang won first singles (6-1, 6-1) to move to 9-0 on the season. Francisco Garcia Raya won second singles (6-2, 6-0), while Robert Muhov won third singles (7-5, 6-1).

Brothers Mason Smith and Caleb Smith won second doubles (6-0, 6-4) to remain unbeaten this season. George Foster and Thomas Nutbrown notched their first win of the season in second doubles (6-1, 6-0).
