Sep. 30âMARSHALL â Marshall slipped past the Willmar girls tennis team on Tuesday.
The Tigers secured a 4-3 victory in the non-conference match. Willmar is 6-14 this season.
There were two matches that went into third sets, which the teams split.
Willmar sophomore Norah Nesges and junior Bryn Behr earned a 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 1 doubles against Jazilyn Steinberg-Jones and Emry Weller. Then, Marshall’s Julia Pafko and Emry Jans defeated Melanie Rhoda and Leiah Arends 5-7, 7-6 (5), 7-5.
Emily Floren and Juliette Haugen won at Nos. 2 and 4 singles for the Cardinals. Floren won 6-4, 6-1 against Kathryn Coudron and Haugen beat Cora Medina 6-1, 6-1.
Willmar begins section play at 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 6 at a site to be determined.
Montevideo’s No. 3 doubles team of Ava Spray and Gabby Augeson won a three-set match in the Thunder Hawks’ sweep of Benson/Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg at Montevideo.
Spray and Augeson defeated the Braves’ Lizzie Jopp and Lyla Oakes, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1.
Montevideo’s Kamryn Bjerkeset and Becca Golden won a tight first set at No. 2 doubles over Annabelle DeToy and Keala Carroll, 7-6 (5), 6-1.
Both Montevideo and Benson/KMS kick off the Section 3A team tournament on Monday.
Four matches advanced into a third set with Yellow Medicine East winning three of them in its defeat of MACCRAY/Renville County West at Clara City.
Sarana West and Abigail Jimenez both won in three sets at Nos. 2 and 3 singles.
West earned a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory against Korri Heiling. Jimenez won 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 against Kylie Prekker.
At No. 1 doubles, YME’s Breea Johnson and Brooklynn Howe defeated Ava Janssen and Ellie Bosch 6-4, 2-6, 7-5. Then, at No. 3 doubles, MACCRAY’s Maggie Burnett and Karly Bratsch secured a 6-4, 2-6, 7-5 win.
YME begins Section 3A play on Monday.
Minnewaska concluded the regular season with a win over Staples-Motley at Staples.
The Lakers swept singles play. At No. 1 singles, Minnewaska’s Alia Randt won a three-set match over Ronnie Noska, 6-2, 1-6, 10-4. Olivia Danielson, Izzy Wallin and Ari Quelle also won in singles for the Lakers.
Clara Rankin and Kaylen Blair added a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles. Kennedy Blair and Peyton Sundheim tacked on a victory at No. 3 doubles.
Minnewaska begins Section 6A play on Thursday.
