Girls Tennis: Fairfield wraps up Southeast Conference title

FAIRFIELD — Poojita Mukadam has won some big matches over the past three years.

On Monday, for one of the first times, the Fairfield senior celebrated after the final point fell on the court.

“I think we deserved that little celebration at the end,” Mukadam said. “That was a really close match.”

Mukadam and Tula Sorflaten built an early lead, then pulled out an epic tiebreaker to secure the final match of a Southeast Conference-clinching dual win for the ninth-ranked (1A) Trojans. Fairfield won 7-2 over Burlington, including a 9-8 win in the No. 2 doubles match by Mukadam and Sorflaten over Leah Sieren and Ruby Orr winning a 12-10 tiebreaker erasing three match points before a return by Sorflaten was sent back into the net closing out a perfect run for the Trojans over the Grayhounds.

“You’re only supposed to go to seven points in those tiebreakers. To get to 12-10, we were right in there the whole time,” Mukadam said. “Burlington’s team was doing great. They were getting the ball back and they were talking. They did good. They were tough to beat.”

Fairfield (9-0, 7-0 Southeast) hosts the Class 1A, Region 6 singles and doubles tournament on Sept. 17.
